The Wildland Toolkit app is specifically designed for wildland firefighters, catering to both newcomers and experienced professionals in the field. This tool is meant to be a long-term companion, serving you during the off-season, at camp, and even on the fireline.

Wildland Toolkit offers a plethora of valuable references and materials for wildland fire, including the actual IRPG (Interagency Incident Response Pocket Guide), ICS (Incident Command System) forms, quizzes covering NWCG (National Wildfire Coordinating Group) courses, photos of tools and aircraft types, and more. It provides an opportunity to learn new things and strengthen existing knowledge.

If you've undergone S290 or S390 training, you know how challenging it can be to calculate metrics such as FDFM (Fine Dead Fuel Moisture), PIG (Probability of Ignition), rate of spread, flame length, and others. However, with this app, you can quickly obtain these numbers as you input the weather conditions. Additionally, you can conveniently store all your weather logs for each fire directly within the app, aiming to simplify the process compared to traditional paper logs.

Furthermore, you have the capability to share your weather logs from the field if you have network coverage or save them for later access on your iPad or M1-based Mac. This synchronizes all the data and enables further analysis and sharing possibilities.

Wildland Toolkit simplifies calculations by generating the following metrics when you input fuel, weather, and topography information:

  • RH (Relative Humidity) and Dewpoint
  • Fine Dead Fuel Moisture
  • Probability of Ignition
  • Flame length
  • Rate of spread
  • Scorch height
  • Direction of maximum spread
  • Effective windspeed

All 54 new fuel models are supported and accompanied by a helpful guide for selecting the appropriate fuel model, complete with sample photos.

Please note that there are no known calculation errors in this version, and any reported problems will be promptly addressed by the developers.

It's important to mention that Wildland Toolkit is not intended as a tutorial on wildland fire behavior. Familiarity with the concepts presented in S290 or S390 classes is assumed. However, the calculations performed in this app resemble those done with BEHAVE software, with the added advantage of a user-friendly interface.

In addition to the aforementioned features, Wildland Toolkit includes an abundance of safety checklists and reference guides, covering topics such as watchouts, fire orders, safety zones, structure defense, sizeups, crew briefing, after action reviews, LCANS (Long-term fire analysis), and complexity analysis.

The app also provides helpful photos and diagrams of cloud types, hand signals, common wildland tools, firefighting aircraft, and ICS organizational charts.

For interactive practice and further learning opportunities, there are quizzes available for basic wildland fire knowledge, CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), NIMS IS-700 (National Incident Management System), S230, and S290.

The included ICS reference guide offers position descriptions and an index of forms, along with incident typing information.

Additionally, the app features a Pack Test Timer that guides you through your pack test, tracking your pace and estimating your finish time. Please note that GPS functionality is utilized for the Pack Test Timer. Continued use of GPS in the background may significantly impact battery life; however, GPS is automatically disabled when the Pack Test is stopped.

The app provides the IRPG in PDF form, ensuring easy access to this essential resource.
